We love all pollinators!

We went to grab some of the wool we’ve been saving, only to hear a very distinct buzzing coming from inside. Upon closer look—turns out it’s already been claimed as a cozy home for a bumblebee hive! Even spotted the waxy cells tucked into the wool (see photo).

Nature doesn’t waste a good resource, and apparently our wool made the perfect nursery. We’ll be leaving this one undisturbed and letting these important pollinators do their thing.

Did you know? Bumblebees are excellent pollinators for high tunnels and greenhouses. Unlike honeybees, they perform buzz pollination—vibrating flowers to release pollen—which makes them especially effective for crops like tomatoes, peppers, and berries.

Some growers even introduce managed bumblebee hives into high tunnels to improve fruit set and quality. They’re active in cooler temperatures and lower light conditions, making them a great fit for early spring or covered growing spaces. Providing safe nesting spots (like undisturbed natural materials… apparently wool included!) and minimizing pesticide use can help support their populations.

A good reminder that sometimes the best projects are the ones we don’t do.
