Mother's Day

Mother’s Day is just around the corner. Did you get your mother a gift yet? Or simply planning to give her the day off or breakfast in bed? However you celebrate, we hope you have a lovely day with your mother, grandmother, etc. remember to pay them the tribute they deserve. As we pay tribute to our mothers this Mother’s Day we would also like to pay tribute to our queen bees and their importance to our hives.

The queen bee is the heart of each hive. Each hive only contains one queen bee. Her role and the survival of the colony are indisputable. Her main responsibility in the hive is to lay eggs. She may lay as many as 2000 to 3000 eggs in a day to keep her hive growing and well-established.

Additionally as the ultimate mother, she produces a special pheromone which acts as a chemical messenger for communication within the hive. This is how she communicates as many as 60,000 worker bees found in the hive to assign jobs and share the responsibilities that it takes to maintain the hive. Each queen decides how well-kept, organized and tidy her hive must be.

A few facts about queen bees:

  • they live about 3 to 5 years.

  • Your lifelong diet is royal jelly.

  • Only bee that can lay fertilized eggs which become worker bees

  • She has twice the size of the worker bees with a longer abdomen to help her lay eggs in the cells.

Happy Mother’s Day to our mothers and queen bees in our life here at Griesemer Beekeeping. Also, Happy Mother’s Day to all our customers who are moms, we hope you have a great day with your loved ones.
