Cough Surpressant

DID YOU KNOW HONEY IS AN EXCELLENT COUGH SUPPRESSANT?

Penn State College of Medicine completed a study in 2007. It showed a small dose of buckwheat honey before bedtime provided better relief to cough at night time over dextromethorphan.

Honey contains antioxidants and antimicrobial properties that help with coughs. Also, it provides soothing effects on contact for the sour throat.

Buckwheat honey seems to provide the best relief. But, the strong molasses flavor maybe hard for some to take as cough medicine. Other honey varieties can provide similar properties as a cough suppressant.

Check with your doctor before giving young children honey! It's not recommend for children under 1 year old and some doctors don't recommend before age 3.

There are some DIY cough syrups that contain honey and add lemon or other ingredients to help provide additional relief to coughing. Next time you have a cough, consider a natural relief before over the counter cough syrups.

Maybe a spoonful of honey is all the medicine you need for that cough!
